SPECIAL NATURE OF IRONY AS WAY OF THINKING

Abstract

The aim of the article is to study the epistemological nature of irony, namely, in identifying irony as a way of human mental activity. The importance of the problem is determined by a number of factors, such as searching the solution of the problem of intrinsical knowledge of reality, of the problem of development, structure, forms and capabilities of human reasoning, as well as of the problem of human creative abilities. The article claims that the nature of irony as a way of thinking is connected with the juxtaposition of opposite conceptual structures in an ironical statement. Two types of ironic reflections have been identified. The first is relevant to Socrates’ irony in which the implication (latent meaning) of an ironical statement is dominant in the discourse of an ironical philosopher. The latter is characteristic of German Romanticism which integrates mutually exclusive conceptual structures in an ironical statement in such a way that neither is top priority. It has been established that due to such acknowledgement of equitable opposite conceptual structures the irony of Romanticism is interpreted as a way of “living thinking” which treats comprehending reality as a “living universum” in the process of constant creative evolution.
