GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM

Abstract

In general, the development of tourism is dependent on the presence of tourist (natural, cultural, specialist) attractions as well as on the state of tourist infrastructure (accom-modation, catering, accompanying and transport infrastructure). Global environmental problems are usually marginalised or entirely overlooked at the stage when tourist offer-ings are developed. The purpose of the research is to identify and define the role of ma-jor global environmental problems in the development of tourism. The research methods that have been used are tourist travel scenario analysis, statistical data analysis, inter-views, surveys and library queries. Major global environmental problems related to the development of tourism are air pollution, quantitative and qualitative changes concern-ing waters, intensified greenhouse effect, seismic and volcanic phenomena, impacts of celestial bodies, ozone depletion (ozone hole), deforestation, soil erosion and desertifi-cation, and also ENSO (El Niño – Southern Oscillation). It has been found that global environmental problems should be taken into account in tourism development strate-gies, chiefly as factors that limit the development of tourism. In rare cases, these prob-lems are of interest to tourists and are treated as tourist attractions. The overwhelming majority of respondents assess their knowledge of global environmental problems as significantly below average, i.e. they state that they have little or no knowledge on the subject.
