TEMPORAL ASPECTS EXPRESSED BY RUSSIAN PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES
Abstract
Temporal specification of events presents a number of aspects which may be expressed separately or jointly in prepositional constructions. Russian prepositions with meanings from the temporal semantic domain usually phrase the relation to some moment of time as a simultaneity, precedence or forwardness. The form of the temporal mark may be explicit specifying some particular moment such as the time of day and date or the period of time expressed in time measures as well as implicit referring to other event. Some prepositions use both schemes, though in corpus statistics one type hugely overrates the other. Another aspect of temporal semantics is a recurrent nature of an event described. Some prepositional aspects show the particular moments from the time interval: the beginning, the end, the middle, the range, etc. We construct a system of functional matches and oppositions for Russian prepositions with temporal meanings basing on corpus statistics, ranking them according to their IPM frequency.
