THE ISSUE OF MODERNISM IN THE WORKS OF SUSANNE SCHMIDA-WOLLERSDORFER: A FORGOTTEN AUTHOR FROM MORAVIAN WALLACHIA
Abstract
The paper presents an analysis of the drama Die Rettungslosen (The Hopeless) by a philosopher and writer Susanne Schmida-Wöllersdorfer (1894-1981) who came from Byst?ice pod Hostýnem in Moravian Wallachia (The Czech Republic). A recently documented literary estate of the author provides an extensive and unique corpus of texts – remarkable dramas, lyric poetry, essays, and esoteric texts, in the form of manuscripts and typescripts, serving among other things as a proof of the existence of what can already be termed Schmida-Kreis (The Schmida circle). Many of the dramas show features of literary modernism, especially expressionism. This hypothesis can be verified through an in-depth literary-historical analysis of the representative work The Hopeless. This scientifically neglected matter will thus be described for the first time and could provide a new perspective on the development of German or more precisely Austrian Expressionism and Modernism.
