THE ISSUE OF MODERNISM IN THE WORKS OF SUSANNE SCHMIDA-WOLLERSDORFER: A FORGOTTEN AUTHOR FROM MORAVIAN WALLACHIA
Abstract
The paper presents an analysis of the drama Die Rettungslosen (The Hopeless) by a philosopher and writer Susanne Schmida-Wöllersdorfer (1894-1981) who came from Byst?ice pod Hostýnem in Moravian Wallachia (The Czech Republic). A recently documented literary estate of the author provides an extensive and unique corpus of texts remarkable dramas, lyric poetry, essays, and esoteric texts, in the form of manuscripts and typescripts, serving among other things as a proof of the existence of what can already be termed Schmida-Kreis (The Schmida circle). Many of the dramas show features of literary modernism, especially expressionism. This hypothesis can be verified through an in-depth literary-historical analysis of the representative work The Hopeless. This scientifically neglected matter will thus be described for the first time and could provide a new perspective on the development of German or more precisely Austrian Expressionism and Modernism.
