EXPERIMENTAL MATHEMATICS AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
Abstract
Background: Experimental mathematics is a new area of modern mathematics. The main feature of this field is obtaining mathematical results by means of computer experiments. Many facts show that statements of problems in the field of experimental mathematics are effective tool of teaching gifted students at school and university. The purpose of present paper is to show that using computer experiments generates some problems that should be solved as soon as possible. Methods: We obtained the list of these problems by means of a pedagogical experiment. Overall, 704 students, aged 12–15, from 29 public schools in Russia took part in it. The experiment was designed to test the technology of teaching mathematics by using GeoGebra. Results: The most important risks are the following: students can lose the capacity for theoretical search and visual thinking, demand and ability to perform deductive reasoning, and skills of building by ruler and compass. Conclusions: Knowledge of these risks is important for the development of approaches to using experimental mathematics methods in mathematical education.
