Abstract

Axiological worldview reflects the most important part of the linguistic worldview, i.e. values and their antipodes – disvalues. Linguistic axiology sees fictional text as a source of information about the values of the language speakers. Comparative linguistic axiology is a promising trend of research, as it doesn’t only help to understand mentality of a language speaker but also reflects values of different communities. Studying language in an axiological aspect involves dyad method. Axiological dyad means unity of values and disvalues which are expressed by language means: lexical units, phraseological units, morphemes, word order in a sentence, punctuation, artistic means (epithets, metaphors, similes.) The article looks into the values and disvalues expressed in the novels and the ways of their representation. Having analysed Galina Tscherbakova’s and Nick Hornby’s artistic texts we have singled out the value and disvalue that go through their works, i.e. happiness/ unhappiness. Galina Tscherbakova and Nick Hornby are the writers that help the reader determine genuine values of life. Characters of their works are mostly young people in pursue of happiness or in the anticipation of it. A reader sees a seeking character of N. Hornby’s novels while the character of G. Tscherbakova’s books has already found him/herself, has perceived the meaning of life. The article studies common and specific features of the novels of both writers, making the point that the categories of happiness/ unhappiness are moral constants, which appear in various epochs almost unaltered. In the novels of the above mentioned authors these categories retain their specific traits.
