SOCIO-SIGNIFICANT ISSUES OF SCIENCE EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITY AT SCHOOL: THE CASE OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION AND ITS USEFULNESS

Abstract

The article deals with the usefulness of science experimental activity and interpersonal communication of school students analysing socio-significant issues (SSI). SSI is a controversial topic which discloses the positive and negative impact of research and innovation discoveries for the society. SSI has a scientific component and also incorporates other disciplines (political, economic, ethical), which allows to involve the evaluation of ethical and moral issues. The evaluation of the negative and positive side of research and innovation involves school students in discussion and communication. The aim of the research is to reveal the levels of interpersonal communication of school students at SSI activity and the relationship of interpersonal communication with the usefulness of science experimental activity. The factor analysis of the data revealed different levels of interpersonal communication of lower secondary school students at SSI activity: I?It; I?You; I?Thou. I-It level was related to the interpersonal distrust and interpersonal distance, as well as to the disbelief about friendship and doubts about friendship. I-You and I-Thou levels were related to interpersonal trust and expectations about friendship. The levels of interpersonal communication I-You and I-Thou significantly correlate with the usefulness of science experimental activity analysing SSI issues. The strongest statistically significant relationships were disclosed between the interpersonal communication corresponding to level I-You and the usefulness of science experimental activity.
