WOMEN ON BOARDS AND THEIR PATH TO THE TOP: EVIDENCE FROM LATVIA

Abstract

The paper tries to research female career paths to the top in Latvian public and private companies for the period of 2017-2018. The study methodology is based on qualitative research from top Latvian companies and particularly revealing of factors, which affect directly and indirectly women career trajectory in selected Latvian companies. In the paper are applied contemporary theories on gender diversity and other women studies streams. The study suggest that Latvia is the country with highest number of females in the management elite and there are numerous factors, which affect those women to climb the career leather. Paper findings show that self-efficacy and self-control are only few factors affecting the career growth, but also strategic decisions and diversity management practices also have impact on female careers in selected Latvian companies. Paper contributes to the gender theory and it has practical implications as well, which could be used as recommendations to the observed companies on how to develop and sustain women leadership and how to manage diversity more efficiently.
