THE STAGES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ART STUDIES IN RUSSIA AND THE HISTORY OF SPANISH ART
Abstract
A.V. Morozova's article deals with the development of Art criticism and Spanish Art research in Russia starting from 1917 up to the present time This sphere has not been investigated in research literature so far. But the knowledge of stages of this development allows us to be better oriented in the historiography of the old Spanish Art of the 15th-18th century. It seems important to take into consideration these stages when analyzing Russian historiography of the Spanish art in the 20th century. The author has analyzed many of the ideological documents of investigated periods and has compared them with tendencies in the development of Art criticism of Spanish Art. During the Soviet times, art studies, alongside with the culture life in general, were centralized. The methods and subject matter of research, and particularly in popular literature on Art, depended on ideology and politic trends. Using the analogy with the stages of the development of the Soviet State and culture offered by historians, Morozova defines some periods in the development of art studies. The article demonstrates the specific character of each period under study, its difference from other periods in Art research. Researchers often had no freedom indeed when choosing an author or a period for research, as well as when choosing a topic, a problem, a point of view. The problem is not only in the directives of the Central Committee of the Communist party, or the edicts of the Art Academy, or newspaper influence. The role of censorship and criticism of the disloyal was great, but disloyal authors could be prosecuted. The knowledge of the allowed research limits at the time under study allows to see and to understand better the research discoveries of each author. Besides, today's Spanish art studies are deeply rooted in the research of the earlier time. During the 20th century Spanish Art research in Russia was important part of European Art research.
