WATER-MILLS IN THE PRADNIK VALLEY (POLAND) – PRESENT CONDITION AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF PRESERVATION, RECULTIVATION AND REVALUATION
Abstract
The existence of water mills in the Pradnik Valley in southern Poland was a result of the riverside nature of settlement and industrial development. Located partly among the unique landscape the smallest national park in Poland – Ojcow – challenge the available means of preservation of architectural and landscape heritage. The research was carried out to review the past studies and to suggest the opportunities for the revaluation and protection of the area. The main research method used is synthetis – query of available scientific sources and organizing them into one compact material. Supplemented by field research and comparative analysis of the current state with available building documentation, as well as monument protection regulations. As a result, an amendment on the past studies can be made. Out of the thirty-four establishments, that processed grains and a few combined with sawmills, there are only two that serve their purpose today. An update of the research from 1983 shows that out of the six mills functioning then, only one of them is still used, however there is one restored by a new owner. It also serves as a living museum. Study shows that the establishments located directly within the area of Ojcow National Park have the best rate of preservation and the ones located outside suffered demise of the remains of the former architecture and even the millrace. A suggestion is made that expanding the area of protection to create the Pradnik Valley Reserve is needed to continue saving the natural and industrial heritage located along the river basin. The inseparable relation between the nature and human settlement in the Pradnik Valley, suggests that architecture and the original landscape should never be taken into account separately while creating means of heritage preservation. There is also a significant touristic and economic potential which could indirectly serve the efforts. The legacy of the riverside industrial development in the Pradnik Valley is a unique component of landscape which is rapidly disappearing. It seems necessary that the efforts should be made to maintain its continuity and to preserve what is left.
