DIFFERENTIAL TYPOLOGIES OF IGOR STRAVINSKY AND ARNOLD SCHOENBERG, REVEALED BY THE MUSIC ON PSALM TEXTS
Abstract
Thesis and antithesis, Stravinsky and Schoenberg, two complex personalities that marked the evolution of universal music, establish the subject matter of this article. The music on psalm texts signed by the two great composers can be considered valuable hints for the construction of the musician's profile by emphasising the origin of the musical choices, projected in the sound reality through the thorough imposing appearance of the two personalities. The differential typologies we will discuss relate to musical attitudes that lead to conclusions about individuality. Philosopher Theodor W. Adorno wrote, in 1947, a work that marked a turning point in the musicology of time. Through two distinct essays, "Schoenberg and Progress" and "Stravinsky and Restoration", this volume depicts the musical extremes of the beginning of the century, under which Adorno perceived the struggle for Europe's cultural future. Thus, the two creators are not just musical personalities, but living symbols of the compositional and philosophical tendencies of the beginning of the 20th century.
