ANALYSE OF INNOVATION PERFORMANCE OF SLOVAK REPUBLIC REGIONS AND MAIN FACTORS OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT BASED ON INNOVATION
Abstract
The paper deals with innovations and its potential influence, respectively importance for regional development. Author analyses innovation performance of particular regions in Slovak republic at the NUTS 2 level. Slovak republic is administratively divided into 8 regions, but for the investigation of regional innovation performance it is divided only into 4 regions at the NUTS 2 level. In this study we use methodology of European commission for measurement of innovation performance of the regions based on regional innovation index. Analyse is based on investigation of 8 particular indicators which are aggregated in 3 groups. All the data used in this study are available from the years 2007 – 2013 and its main source is regional statistical data. Particular regions of Slovakia are markedly behind in the innovation performance in comparison with the most developed regions of Europe. According to the analyse factors which influence development of region on the base of innovations are formulated. Author formulated 8 basic factors which directly influence innovation performance of the region and also indirectly competitiveness of regional economy. The paper stresses the thesis that development of a region needs to be formalized top down (from the region), provided requirements of entrepreneurs are deliberated. This kind of controlled regional development became a base for competitive regional economy.
