Abstract

Space recycling is one way of reducing the suburbanization and preventing investment pressure on valuable natural areas. One of the challenges of territorial development of the European Union indicated in the Territorial Agenda 2020 is to reduce urban sprawl through the reuse of land called recycling of land, which includes urban regeneration, the use of areas abandoned, unused or derelict lands. Changes in the global economy, reducing coal mining, ecological solutions resulted in changes taking place in cities, both large and small. Industry began to play smaller role, which was followed by elimination of unprofitable facilities. In Poland, changes related to the implementation of new technologies, changes ownership, the transition from communism to capitalism caused the closure of many large, state-owned enterprises. It turned out that a large part of industrial and production facilities has outdated technology and an excessive office part, which ceased to be competitive. In Poland, in the early 90s, the transformation in the employment sector caused the loss of many companies related to the industry production. One example of industrial area, which suffered, as a first, degradation, devastation and transformation was Industrial S?u?ewiec. This area (about 260 h) in the 90В’s was noticed by investors, as a place with huge potential - good connections with both the city center, the airport and the Warsaw railway junction. From more than 20 years, Industrial S?u?ewiec has experienced many functional and spatial changes. This area, previously industrial, has been designated for the commercial and residential purpose. This article will examine functional and spatial changes, which took place after the elimination of industry in S?u?ewiec.
