Abstract

The role of the family is to create a stable and secure environment in which the needs of all its members are met. Only a well-functioning family is able to fulfill this task to the optimum extent. There are many things influencing family functioning. One of them is also the birth and upbringing of a disabled child. The aim of our study was to find out which factors influence the functioning of the family with a disabled child. A quantitative research strategy was used. To measure the functioning of the family, a standardized Family Functioning Style Scale was developed by Deal, Trivette and Dunst. The second questionnaire was a custom-built questionnaire, which was focused on identifying selected demographic indicators. The survey group consisted of 493 respondents (38.15 В± 7.62, range = 18-65). The condition of participation in the research was the personal care of a disabled child. The analysis of the results shows that the factors influencing the functioning of the family include the education of the parents and also the sex of the person who takes care of the child. There has also been a link between parental age and family values. Place of residence has a significant impact on the mobilization of family resources and family commitment. Maintaining and supporting optimal family work is the goal not only of individual family members, but often also of professionals working with their families. For social workers, it is therefore necessary to know the factors that positively or negatively affect the functioning of the family.
