PROPORTIONAL ANALYSIS OF A TRANSVERSAL BOND OF THE HISTORIC TRUSS IN THE GOTHIC ROMAN-CATHOLIC CHURCH OF ST CATHERINE IN BANSKA STIAVNICA DATED TO THE MID-17TH CENTURY

Abstract

Based on the researches focused on the historic trusses of the sacral buildings in Slovakia, we analysed these trusses in order to uncover their geometric concepts and proportional relations. Several trusses in Bohemia and Moravia were also analysed. The proportional relation of a truss to a building was also taken into account in some cases. The data on the principles used in historic trusses of the sacral buildings, supported with the period literature, were applied to the historic truss of the Gothic Roman-Catholic church of St Catherine in BanskГЎ ВЉtiavnica whose roof was built in the mid-17th century. Its previous truss, which was not original because the church was consecrated in 1500, was taken down by a strong wind. The proportional analysis enabled to discover the system that was used to measure the truss structure. The result is the specification of one of the methods used in the Renaissance period to design the truss construction conception using the proportions in relation to the local measure system.
