TRANSLATION IN THE ESP CLASSROOM – A ROMANIAN AND MOLDAVIAN ACCOUNT
Abstract
This paper draws on our work as associate assistant with the 2nd year students at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi, Romania and its extension in Balti, The Republic of Moldova. During the Business English seminars, among other activities, we integrated translation exercises from English to Romanian and vice versa to develop our intermediate students’ productive and receptive skills in a communicative language teaching environment. Our main aim was to distinguish between students’ responses to translation as a purposeful task in the ESP classroom based on their background and nationality. We will also account for their common mistakes when translating, language variants (particularly when rendering sentences from English to Romanian and Moldavian, respectively) the importance of correcting them and the impact of such exercises on pre-experience learners.
