Abstract

The purpose of the study is to discuss dwelling, and how it affects the building structure. A building structure is the basis for creating an architectural form. One can't discuss architectural design if dwelling and the building structure are not taken into account during the design process. It is the architects who decide where the elements of construction will be placed in space, and it is these elements that create future dwelling spaces. Architecture is meant to be an apt answer to the user's need. The needs can vary from the most basic ones, resulting from vital functions, to those of higher levels, i.e. the needs of spiritual and aesthetic experiences. The use of the form will satisfy both the most basic needs, as well as the spiritual, and will arouse new needs. Dwelling is an observation and acceptance of the gifts of the world: the brightness of sunshine, the coolness of the shadow, the lapping water, birds singing, or textures of materials. It is a constant search for a place that will serve the user, however, one can't imagine dwelling if one doesn't experience it in a given space, in a given form, by touching the material and crossing the threshold of the house. Dwelling as a possibility in space is a solution that appears unintended, even long after the architect has completed their task and stepped down. The article proposes a new form of understanding what architectural design is, and what decisions should be made to create good architectural designs. It also emphasises that the architect should consciously employ the solutions that are conducive to human existence.
