WHITEBOARD UPGRADE? DISCUSSING SPECIFIC NEEDS FOR ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN
Abstract
As more and more aspects of the design and manufacturing process move into the digital environment, the way that design is being taught becomes an up to date topic. The novelty of digital technologies makes the transition from the analogical environments to be seen as a natural and unavoidable event, taking into account their alleged superiority. Traditional means are perceived as being outdated, without taking into account all their strengths and weaknesses. Even though in some fields of application this particular approach is feasible, the issue of teaching design and architecture has some aspects which make this transition debatable. This study analyses the transition from blackboards to whiteboards with or without digital augmentation. Within this study advantages and limitations of the two systems are being identified, as well as a series of characteristics that should be taken into account in order to accomplish the development of a hybrid system: a support for presentations and discussions adapted to the specific needs of design and architecture. Moreover, such a system can mediate the contradictory relation towards technology that students and teachers have, given their belonging to different generations.
