Abstract

The migration of the population is one of the demographic phenomena causing quite large changes. Negative effects are felt especially in the areas of departure, where the aging tendency is clearly recorded. The Danube port towns in Romania, as a result of the political and administrative changes registered over the last 25 years, once with the transition from the centralized socialist economy to the free market economy, have recorded this phenomenon of population mobility, especially of the young population, in a quite acute manner. The study aims to evaluate this aspect and to propose solutions for the recovery of the economic situation of each city/town, depending on the existing social and economic particularities. Methodologically, a series of steps have been considered with respect to components of the studies; on the one hand, the assessment of the socio-demographic situation in each city/town, and on the other hand, finding and proposing solutions as alternatives to local development. The assessment of the local economic situation is based on the CAEN data of each city/town. The results of the study confirm the functional changes of each city/ town, the mutations in the socio-demographic structure, as well as the acceptance and support provided by the population with respect to alternative solutions for the local economic development. In conclusion, the considerable reduction of the labour force with each year can cause serious changes in the Romanian economy, which requires finding a solution for the future, so that its situation will not become critical.
