THE SPIRITUAL SYMBOLISM OF HUMAN CLOTHING IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to present some aspects of the symbolism of human clothing in the Book of Revelation. The theme is biblical with regard to anthropology. The work has as starting point some general considerations about the various symbolisms in Revelation, especially the anthropological symbolism. As exemplification, we use a short exegesis of three images: The Son of Man (Revelation 1:12-20), the Woman crowed with 12 stars (Revelation 12); the clothes of saints (Revelation 7:12-17; 19:7-8). The analysis highlights the complexity of the images and their old testamentary background. The last step regards theological and anthropological applications in relationship with other types of apocalyptic symbolism. These applications outline the role of clothing and its significance. As conclusions, we could mention two results. First, there is the spiritual symbolism of the clothing in John's writing. Secondly, John's exhortations: the warning against the various dangers and the call to fidelity for the Lamb's followers. The study can bring nowadays a clearer understanding of the rich symbolism of Revelation. At the same time, it is a proposal to re-evaluate the role and the functions of clothing for the people of our society.
