THE URBAN IDENTITY OF METROPOLIS RESIDENTS AND MIGRANTS: A RISK AREA OR A RESOURCE FOR WELL-BEING?

Abstract

This article is intended to address current problems in the formation of residents’ and migrants’ urban identities. The Russian metropolis of Yekaterinburg is taken from the perspective of social anthropology as an example to illustrate the problem. We explore the connection between the perception of migrants and the ethnographic situation in metropolises and determine the factors affecting the formation of the urban identity of migrants and the local population. The article presents an overview of these factors’ effect on the formation of migrant and Russian identities in a metropolis using the results of monitoring the identities of migrants from Central Asian countries and local residents of Yekaterinburg. Migrants experience the greatest difficulties in forming an identity; they initially belong to a marginalised stratum, and under the conditions of a changing social structure, increasingly face problems finding their identity. The new identity of local residents and migrants in the metropolis is linked to the problems with integrating migrants into urban society in the context of the spatial relations in the political, economical, social, cultural and other spheres of public life.
