THE TRANSFORMATION OF EXPLORER'S IDENTITY IN THE COURSE OF FIELD-WORK
Abstract
This article focuses on the reverse side of the anthropological fieldwork on a case of explorer's identity. This case uncovers the process of research work inside the island community of Solovetsky archipelago. The main aspect of this paper is autoreflexion of a scientist. First of all he has the status of a spectator. On the next stage we find him as a participant involved, to a greater or lesser extent, in social action, production processes inside the community. But even being simply a spectator of random scenes, he nonetheless observe through the prism of analytic distance. On the one hand this is an advantage and on the other hand there's a problem of the anthropological transition to the mode of involved or participating observation. For the scope of fieldwork methodology it's extremely important to reveal the interplay between the subject of inquiry and the identity of an explorer. We come across a case of interpenetration of identities. While investigating types and forms of island community members' identities, one should correlate his results with dynamic of his own identity that is “fluid” by nature. But still though scientists' self-identity is an important factor that influences the outcomes of a research, it's not simply a measuring tool. It should be taken into the account during field and analytical work but shouldn't become a subjective account in whole. Retracing the problem mentioned above, we consider the value of autoreflexion and the experience analysis that helps to seize explorers' identity in the process of immersion into the studied community.
