Abstract

The Republic of Macedonia, as one of the youngest countries in the world has been faced with many challenges and obstacles in its strives towards democracy, building of democratic institutions and above all establishing a functioning and generally acceptable democratic culture of mutual cooperation, trust, understanding and tolerance. Besides, being a country of many ethnicities, the Republic of Macedonia has a very characteristic religious landscape. Representatives of the three largest monotheistic religions, including many denominations within, have learned to live side by side over years and centuries. Never the less, during the last years, mainly from the beginning of this century, religion has in many ways served as a tool of division instead of being a tool of bringing people together. The Macedonian orthodox, perceive the church to be a main pillar in guarantying their national identity and therefore during the entire period of the countries existence as an independent country have shown a public and clear tendency of favoring it as opposed to all other religious communities in the country. On the other hand, such activities have been clearly noted to be considered as discriminatory by other religious communities in the country. The paper strives to provide insides regarding the general opinions of citizens regarding religious (in) tolerance in the Republic of Macedonia
