TOURIST POTENTIAL OF THE ARCTIC REGIONS IN RUSSIA

Abstract

Tourism development in the Russian Arctic is one of the most promising prospects for the regional economies in terms of sustainability, diversification, and social outcomes. However, the opportunities and capabilities to participate in the tourism sector vary among different regions depending on their geographical location, climatic conditions, and infrastructural development. Official statistics often cannot catch up with fast speed changes of the Arctic communities. While several case studies have been conducted with the use of qualitative methods for the analysis of tourism development, the knowledge gap exists in quantitative estimations of the phenomenon. In order to receive more adjusted information on the development of tourist infrastructure the authors combined analysis of secondary data and Russian Committee of Statistics with the Internet tourist resources available in Russian. Based on analysis of available information the authors examined development of economies, social, transportation and tourist infrastructure and recreational resources of the Russian Arctic regions. While the Russian Arctic in general has a lot of specific advantages and disadvantages for the tourism development, uneven development of its regions has resulted in its different trajectories.
