INCREASING THE COMPETITIVENESS OF THE CITY BY ELIMINATING THE ASYMMETRY OF SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT

Abstract

In the modern world, cities play an important role. In the case of non-competitiveness of the city, the welfare of the population, the conditions for doing business, reducing employment, etc., deteriorates, so the notion of "city competitiveness" comes close to the notion of "sustainable development". In many cities, spatial development begins to experience an increasing imbalance between the demands of the population and business entities, on the one hand, and the opportunities for meeting them by building new and changing existing material objects, on the other. As a consequence, spatial differentiation of local territories as places of vital activity intensifies, specific problems of urban development arise. Consequences of inefficient organization of the settlement's territory may be the complication of transport links, the extension of engineering communications, the proximity of environmentally harmful production facilities to residential areas, the lack of green massifs in the city. In many cities the historically established old center remains less favorable to life than new microdistricts. Therefore, increasing the efficiency of spatial organization of the territory is one of the most important components of the complex development of the city. Spatial development of a city is often perceived as an increment of its territory. Meanwhile, the development of new territories and the construction of new facilities often only complicates the processes of organization of urban space and life support for the population, and the quality of the urban environment is reduced. Therefore, the primary task of spatial development of the city is to search for the resources of already developed territories, and only when these resources are exhausted, it is expedient to expand the territory of the city. Especially important for creating a comfortable living environment is the formation of urban landscape and landscape. A favorable urban landscape helps attract businessmen and tourists to the city. In some cities, special programs for the design of central, station, park and other areas of mass visits, decoration of shops, use of historical and cultural monuments are created. The article contains an analysis of problems of spatial development of cities and methods of its improvement for increasing the competitiveness of the city. The authors studied the content of current and prospective competitiveness of the city, cited the classification of factors that determine the competitiveness of the city.
