STRESS FACTORS AMONG DENTAL AND MEDICAL STUDENTS

Abstract

Background: Stress has turn out to be an important topic in academic environment as well as in our society. Many studies, in the field of behavioral science have carried out extensive research on stress and its outcomes and concluded that the topic needed more attention. The profession of medicine and dental medicine are considered extremely stressful for all stages of the medical career. The aim of this study was to identify different factors of stress among dental and medical students at Faculty of Medicine and Dental Medicine, “Ovidius” University of Constanta. Methods: The participants of this study were students from the fifth and sixth year at Faculty of Medicine and Dental Medicine, “Ovidius” University of Constanta. A thirty-seven item self-reported questionnaire was distributed during academic year 2015 - 2016. The questionnaire was distributed to a total number of students of 212, 114 medical students and 98 dental students chosen by a random selection. Out of the 212 administrated questionnaires only were 182 were returned and included in the analysis, giving a response rate of 85.8%. The stress factors were classified into five categories of stress causal factors: academic performance, patient and clinic responsibilities, faculty relations, personal life issues, and professional issues. Results: The results of this study showed that females scored statistically significant higher values in all stressor domains. In addition, the dental environment seems to be more stressful than medical environment. Besides, in both dental or medical school, fifth year students express to be more stressed than sixth year students.
