Abstract

The study aimed to understand how participants experience spirituality when dealing with the challenges caused by having a family member with a disability. It explored how individuals who actively practice a spiritual life perceive the role of spirituality in coping with these difficult circumstances. Twelve participants aged 33 to 57, all with higher education and a strong personal spiritual practice, took part in the research. A qualitative approach was used, based on semi-structured interviews, and the data were examined through thematic analysis. The results showed three key themes: the contribution of spirituality to personal growth, its role as a source of strength and resilience within the family, and the importance of support coming from the spiritual community. Personal growth appeared through inner peace, active and hopeful problem-solving, forgiveness, compassion, renewed joy, positive changes in family relationships, and a deeper sense of inner freedom. Spirituality also supported resilience by helping participants accept disability, search for meaning in it, understand it within the context of God’s plan, strengthen love as a guiding principle, and deepen their faith. Community support played a significant role through emotional, social, and practical assistance offered by the spiritual group they belonged to. Overall, the findings align with previous studies while offering specific insights into how spirituality can enhance personal development and strengthen families facing the challenges of disability.
