Abstract

Given the ever-emerging trends in teaching, deriving from the constructivist theory of teaching and learning and promoting the active role of learners in the learning approach, future teachers at all levels of education need to be trained appropriately. At the Faculty of Education in Maribor students of elementary education are offered the course Environmental and Social Studies lessons outside the classroom, which aims to acquaint students with the basic characteristics of teaching and active learning outside the classroom and enables them to transfer these characteristics to practice. The purpose of our research was to explore whether excursion form of field work, as one of the possible forms of active learning outside the classroom, influences the improvement of students' factual knowledge. In the empirical research, carried out in March 2018, 45 students participated in the pedagogical experiment. The results showed that after the final examination the participating students had better results than in the initial examination of the knowledge before the excursion, as they achieved a higher result in all tasks. Furthermore, students with higher results at the beginning of the pedagogical experiment also achieved higher results after the excursion; therefore, the excursion had a positive contribution to improving their factual knowledge.
