Abstract

The aim of the paper is to analyse social work with groups in selected social welfare services in Slovakia and to identify the benefits of social work with the group (social group work) as compared to social work with the individual (social casework). The authors have chosen a qualitative research strategy; the research method was a structured interview. We have established research question: What are the typical features, advantages, but also disadvantages, which provides social work with a group in comparison to social work with the individual? Participants in the in-depth interview were social workers working at the Labour, Social Affairs and Family Office and at the low-threshold day centre for children and youth. We have used open coding to interpret and analyse the data obtained, we have identified codes, and defined subcategories, categories, and the central category. We have found that the answers of the participants are overlapping and repeating on most questions, so we conclude that social work with the group brings, in comparison to social work with the individual, the advantage of mutual communication, when one can learn new information, gain new experience and opinions. Clients can establish new contacts, relationships, or friendships with the group members. The group builds co-responsibility, mutual understanding, social learning and mutual motivation. Social work with the group also brings benefits to the variability of problem solving and group dynamics. Members of the group share similar feelings, problems, so we believe that clients can both look together for different solution options that will lead to eliminating or solving the problem. The client also collects feedback from a social worker, as well as from all members of the group, while working with the group.
