Abstract

This paper is the materialisation of the work of a team who participated in the „Design & Business workshop - innovative Romanian products. Creative Industries, Creative Communities, Creative Cities”, which took place in 2015 in Arad, Romania at Aurel Vlaicu University - Faculty of Design. The team consisting of four students was coordinated by PhD. Prof. Ionescu Claudiu Emil and Ass. Arch. T?m??an Maria. Arad County, Romania is located in the DKMT cross-border area. In spite of this favourable geographical position and despite the various tourist attractions existing here, the main tourist practice happening in this part of Romania is transitory. Consequently, tourist activities are underdeveloped in the Western part of Apuseni Mountains – also known as Z?rand Mountains. The development of tourist activities within a given region requires, in the authors' opinion, three main key-features: advertising, efficient management and a functional infrastructure (means of access and transportation, housing, food services and the afferent structures). In this context, the present study focuses on an existing housing structure from Z?rand Mountains: the Debela Gora complex, once a well-known holiday destination, but badly deteriorated and almost forgotten today. The proposals consist of feasible low cost and efficient refurbishment methods for the main cabin within this complex, in order to make it inhabitable again and to integrate it in tourist itineraries. Moreover, it is shown how interior design can become an effective tool for recycling buildings in an ecological approach.
