Abstract

Using e-learning platforms in universities in Romania has become a habit, surpassing trends and integrating naturally in a modern educational system. The objective of this article is to show what are the most used platforms in major universities in Romania and why they have been chosen. If high schools in Romania e-learning platforms were introduced centrally through a project of the Ministry of Education, universities have relied on university autonomy. We have identified and analyzed the main e-learning platform available online from the official websites of major universities. Then we conducted a survey among students and teachers to see which are the most used features and subjects for which they are used. Our suspicion was confirmed by the fact that most universities use open-source platform for blended learning, but with different engine management systems content. One of the findings of our research was that beyond technology and functionality, perhaps the most important factor in choosing an e-learning solution is the size and inventiveness of the developer community that allow the development and subsequent adaptation of e-Learning platforms to the new educational challenges. But the challenges continue to see if the development of educational content can be supported by these platforms if their choice proved to be inspired.
