COULD A MODEL MORPHOLOGICAL SOLUTION - PROTOTYPE – OF AN URBAN AREA BE USEFUL?
Abstract
This paper recognizes four distinct approaches underlying the theoretical works during the late 19th and 20th century. In the first two, authors were searching for a model morphological solution – prototype - in response to new arising requirements of society and technology. The morphological solutions were either consistent or inconsistent with traditional morphology When real life applications of some of these models, especially the morphological experiments, proved to be, mildly put, a disappointment, the third approach took on. Here authors have been searching for characteristics of a good city and a good city form analyzing well loved and liveable places of existing cities, trying to put finger on what social processes and morphological characteristics catalyze the desired effects. The fourth is represented by works searching for a model morphological solution - prototype – thus following the example of the first and second approach - but simultaneously heavily building on findings of the third approach. The paper reviews these approaches and concludes, that using a prototype has definitely its advantages, but when choosing a specific type, one should be aware of the patterns it consists of and requirements it is thus able to fulfil.
