ARCHITECTURAL IMAGINATION. FROM REAL ARCHITECTURE TO ARCHITECTURAL MOTIF IN ILLUSTRATION
Abstract
The study focuses on architectural motifs in the selected sample of illustrations by Slovak artists and the reception of such motifs by junior school aged children. Fantasy architectural motifs are relatively frequent in the illustrations to fairy tales however, their detailed descriptions are not so often present in the fairy tales’ texts. The study introduces basic types of architectural motifs in fictional literature for children relative to whether the illustrators took inspiration from history or from real architecture. The illustrators tend to be inspired mainly by eclecticism and, among modern architectural styles, expressionism and organic architecture. Some postmodern strategies appeal to them as well. The authors also focus on imaginative function that the architectural motif might possess in relation to child’s perception. They contemplate the possibilities for integrating the issue of illustrative representation of architectural motif into the educational standards of the Slovak national curriculum in one of the art education thematic areas. Analytical-synthetic and comparative methods were utilised in the study
