ASYMMETRY STRATEGY IN ARTISTIC EXPERIMENTATION IN RUSSIAN PRE-ROMANTICISM
Abstract
The main issue of the study is scientific explanation of the causes, strategies and mechanisms of renovation of art as holistic aesthetic system. The objective of the study is to specify and describe the strategy and mechanisms of artistic experimentation in Russian Pre-Romanticism and explain the dialectics of interaction of two (identical equation and contraposition) aesthetic systems in Russian Literary Process of the late XVIII century period. The research design is based on complex approach, involving combination of such methods as deductive, comparative, contrastive, culturological and semiotic analysis, paying due to interdisciplinary nature of phenomena under study. The Russian Pre-Romanticism creative strategy includes the experimental shift in standard symmetric distribution of such binary oppositions as “ancient / modern”, “local / global”, “rational / intuitive”, “sublime / profane” and the derivable entities. This asymmetry strategy exceeds the norms and standards of identical equation aesthetics, inherent and appreciated in classicism. Asymmetry strategy was enacted in various literature genres and other arts. The research results contribute to critical rethinking the widespread idea of European and Russian culture of the late XVIII century as homogenous and void of inner controversies. The methodology proposed for eliciting and analysis of asymmetrical situation of standoff and constructive interaction of the main stream in literature and peripheral / exceptional artistic discourses can be applied productively to experimental aesthetic practices within the research area of XVIII–XXI European Arts development studies.
