SOCIAL MEDIA JOURNALISM AND ITS CULTURAL IMPLICATIONS
Abstract
Social media have become one of the most influential communication phenomena of the 21st century. It is therefore no surprise that publishing journalistic content via social networks is quickly overcoming the rather articificially created distinctions between professional journalists, civic activists and regular members of the media audiences. As the institutionalized press is now just one of the many existing ways of reaching the general public, journalism theorists as well as professional journalists have to embrace new production processes and ways of staying in touch with their target audiences. The aim of the text is to offer a thorough set of theoretical knowledge on specific aspects of digital journalism on online social networks with emphasis on the latest scholarly findings related to the given topic. The author works with an assumption that even though many recipients belonging to the younger generations of media audiences do not tend to buy and read traditional newspapers, they still seek quality information and online social networks now function as their main and preferred information sources. That is why all media professionals, journalists not being any exception, need to understand the cultural implication of publishing and seeking information via social media.
