Abstract

Pawel Lukaszewski is the famous contemporary Polish composer, born in 1968 in Czestochowa, educated in Warsaw, the full professor of composition at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music. His sacral and religious music gained the renown around the world. He was awarded with the В‘Orphee dВ’Or de lВ’Academie du Disque lyriqueВ’ and nine В‘FryderykВ’ Awards in Poland. The prestigious vocal ensembles form Europe, Asia and America perform this music [1]. Lukaszewski's music of religious and sacred character operates largely with a modern form related to motet shape known from the Renaissance period. Polish contemporary music seems to be significantly inspired by the Italian choral a cappella forms. The religious aspects of them are also vivid in nowadays compositions. Taking the above features in consideration, I suggest analyzing a В‘modern motet styleВ’ (which is my own research proposal) on the example of Pawel LukaszewskiВ’s choral music. The research question is: what are the features of a В‘modern motet styleВ’ with relation to Pawel LukaszewskiВ’s choral music? It can be discussed in the following areas: - the Renaissance sources in a В‘modern motet styleВ’ in LukaszewskiВ’s music - the changes of the choral music in European great vocal tradition from 16th to 20th century influencing a В‘modern motet styleВ’ - components of LukaszewskiВ’s choral a cappella works as a manifestation of a В‘modern motet styleВ’. The method of the research refers to observation of the style category in art and music delivered from the thesis by Heinrich Wolfflin, Jacob Burckhardt and Polish Scholars like Hieronim Feicht and Marcin Tadeusz Lukaszewski. The musical works used as examples of this thesis come from the CD recording Daylight Declines performed by Tenebreae ensemble conducted by Nigel Short [2].
