LOCAL CENTERS FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
Abstract
The article continues the series of publications on cognitive urbanism - a newly applied field of research and design in the built environment studies. The MACRO-level of the Built Environment incorporates such models as the "enclave", "region (area)" and "district" that are different in pedestrian proximity, circulation and identification of place. The local centers in residential areas should be programmed and located in the context of these cognitive models. The roles and importance of local centers have been studied in field surveys and compared with the outcomes of other social studies. Today the focus of urban planners and urban studies is aimed at the new typology of buildings and places where the focus seeks to create a people-friendly environment and stimulate their self-organization. Local centers actually serve as anchor points for public life in the area. The role of local centers will continue to expand and have an increasing impact on structuring the quality of life for different age groups. This article offers a new approach for evaluation of the program according to the placement of local centers. Topological models of Cognitive Urbanism provide a conceptual framework for the best location and program of local centers.
