THE WAY GLAUCOMA AFFECTS PATIENTS PERSONALITY
Abstract
In our daily ophthalmological practice we often met psycho-emotional traits in our patients, associated by experience with glaucoma. This led us to assess the glaucoma patient’s behavior and personality compared to non-glaucomatous patients using a psychological personality psychometric instrument. The trial was performed on 80 glaucoma patients and 80 non-glaucomatous patients. We used the psychometric instrument NEO PI-R (The Revised Personality Inventory) to assess the personality profile in both groups. Glaucoma patients showed accentuated anxiety traits in a larger degree (55, 5%) comparing with non-glaucomatous patients (2, 3%) with low scores, higher scores being related to accentuated feelings of worry, fear of illness. Also the glaucoma patients had higher scores for depression (57, 2%) comparing to non-glaucomatous patients (35, 2%), higher scores being related to accentuated symptoms of sadness. Glaucoma patients developed anxiety and depression related to their disease.
