EFFECTIVE WAYS OF ORGANIZING STUDENTS’ IN-CLASS AND OUT-OF-CLASS WORK (ON THE EXAMPLE OF TEACHING LITERATURE TO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS)

Abstract

The paper discusses effective forms of in-class and out-of-class work from the students’ and teacher’s perspectives. The research is based on the author’s 9 years personal experience of teaching literature at the Faculty of Foreign Languages (Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University, Russia). Methods of research include personal observation, quantitative and qualitative analyses as well as chi-square test employed to interpret questionnaire survey of students’ needs and opinions on effective forms of organizing in-class and out-of-class work aimed at enhancing literary competence. As a result, besides traditional lectures and seminars, the following types of work are discussed in terms of their effectiveness and validity as educational tools: discussion genres, peer-teaching, literary contests, literary tea-party, mock talk-show, literary solitaire, etc.
