DEVELOPMENT AND CHARACTERISTICS OF SLOVAC BANKIG SYSTEM

Abstract

Slovak banking system began to develop towards a modern European banking system since 1989. During this period Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia. Reform of banking system started to prepare before the Revolution in 1989. Its implementation took place after 1989. This contribution defines the three main stages of development of the banking system in Slovakia – creation of market conditions, development in conditions of the Slovak Republic and Slovak banking sector as part of banking sector of euro zone. This contribution focuses on the essential characteristics, development and a brief analysis of the major factors in the development of the banking sector in Slovakia. The first part is devoted to the formation of a two-tier banking system. The second part deals with an important milestone - the restructuring and privatization of major state-owned banks. The third part analyzes main characteristics and factors of development of the banking market on the basis of statistical and analytical techniques.
