A ROMANIAN PERSPECTIVE ON THE OUTCOMES OF THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL

Abstract

The Second Vatican Council was followed with concern and with interest in communist countries, especially by those responsible for managing the relationship between State and Church. The works of the Council, its decisions and documents and then the implementation of those documents had the potential to affect and destabilize the religious policies of this regimes declared atheist. The communist regime in Bucharest was no exception and tried that the "aggiornamento" targeted by the Catholic Church would not spread its contagious effect in Romania too. Our research, based on the documents produced by the Cults Department [Departamentul Cultelor] showed that the strategic arsenal used was varied and multileveled. The Romanian officials aimed at limiting and even ban any contact that the Romania Orthodox Church could have had with the Council; the denunciation in a propagandistic manner the anticommunism of the Council and of the Vatican in general; several obstacle that the catholic representatives had to overtake in their attempt to visit Romania; and the reading and analyzing in an ideological grid the Council documents. It is our belief that the Romanian communist regime was particularly concerned regarding the outcomes of the Second Vatican Council because on the very difficult commune agenda there was the issue of the Greek Catholic Church in Romania and its dissolution in 1948. Among others, these is the main reason for the very tense Romanian-Vatican relations.
