DRIVING COGNITIONS AS PREDICTORS OF ERRORS, LAPSES, ORDINARY AND AGGRESSIVE VIOLATIONS ON THE ROAD

Abstract

The role of human behavior in traffic accidents is widely recognized. Previous studies sustain the associations between dysfunctions cognitions and some forms of maladaptive driving behaviors. The present study investigated how three types of dysfunctional driving cognitions (accident, panic, and social cognitions) are related to four classes of aberrant driving behavior (errors, lapses, ordinary, and aggressive violations). We also investigated the differences between drivers who drive daily and those who drive with a lower frequency in the four dimensions of driving behavior. A sample of 786 drivers (Mage = 33.58; 56.2 % men) filled in scales measuring the dysfunctional driving cognitions and driving behavior. The results showed that driving cognitions were positively associated with errors, lapses, ordinary and aggressive violations on the road. Moreover, drivers that drive less than once per week reported lower scores on ordinary and aggressive violations, compared to drivers that drive daily or two or three times per week. The implications of the results for intervention strategies designed to increase traffic safety are discussed.
