INFLUENCE OF SPORTIVE TRAINING OVER CORTICAL AREAS AT ATHLETES EMPHASIZED THROUGH SOMATOSENSORY EVOKED POTENTIALS
Abstract
Background: Performance sportive training induces plastic cortical changes, characteristic to each studied sportsman, through the repetitive character of the specific set of movements of each sporting discipline practiced by the sportsman. The purpose of our study was to evaluate some of the somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) wavesВґ parameters at sportsmen from different sport categories: volleyball, handball, fencing and to compare the obtained data, in order to emphasize specific cortical plastic functional modifications appeared at cortical areas, induced by performance training. Methods: The tested group was formed of 19 athletes, with ages between 16 and 24 years, to whom was applied the stimulation of median nerve at radiocarpian articulation, bilaterally, successively, thus, were recorded and measured the intervals between waves P14-N20 and waves N20-P25 and SEP waves' (P14-15, N20, P22-25, N25-30, P35, N40, P45) latencies, with the help of Nihon-Kohden MEP 150 device and the 10-20 system of electroencephalography. Results: Were measured the intervals between waves P14-N20 and N20-P25, which represent the intracranial conduction and were computed the latencies of the mentioned SEP waves'. For statistical processing were used Pearson and Student tests. Conclusions: For the majority of SEP components, we cannot distingue statistical difference between the studied groups, although, some correlations were found for P14, P35, N40 waves generated by the association cortex, these unspecific SEP components, are the ones that suffer important functional plastic changes, due to performance sportive training. These observations can be original components of this study, because the specialty literature showed attention only to components generated by specific cortex and very few data were presented for SEP components generated by non-specific cortex.
