SOCIAL STATE AND UNEMPLOYMENT

Abstract

Unemployment is a phenomenon that the citizens of the Slovak Republic have been encountering since the beginning of the process of economic transformation, i.e. since the end of 1989. The rate of unemployment varies by region, social group and economic cycle. With economic growth, creation of new jobs and measures adopted by the state the possibilities of becoming employed broaden, the number of employed persons rises, and the rate of unemployment falls. The role of the state, via active and flexible state policies, especially employment policy, is to create the best possible conditions for the creation of new jobs, increase the qualification of job applicants, gradually interconnect job market needs with a system of branches of study and the overall network of secondary schools, colleges and universities, and, by means of additional measures, achieve the lowest possible rate of unemployment and increase the number of working people. At the same time, a low rate of unemployment contributes to motivating especially younger generation and the well-educated to continue working in Slovakia and not to seek working, studying or living abroad. This work discusses present unemployment in Slovakia, unemployment as a social event, and least but not last employment policy in the context of social policy. The theoretical part of the work applies textual and content analysis of the technical literature. In order to ascertain the current rate of unemployment, the latest data of the Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family will be used. A statistical method will be applied.
