METHODOLOGICAL PATTERNS OF EXTREMISM: A REVIEW OF THEORETICAL APPROACHES
Abstract
In the article the problem of definition of extremism and theoretical interpretation of its essence is observed. Modern theoretical extremism researches are characterized by a remarkable variety of methodological approaches and concepts. The attempt to classify them just in the group around the problem of radicalization of social and political movements into violent extremism might result in enumeration of several dozens of sociological and other social theories. Whereby, the notion of extremism maintains its conceptual ambiguity and changes its content depending on socio-political and socio-cultural context. The article suggests a new solution to the problem with definition of extremism in terms of typology formation of various definitions of extremism built on identifying and description of methodological patterns – fundamental and structure-forming methodological ideas which establish some specific schools of sciences and directions in the interpretation of extremism. In addition, the pattern has no connection with the explanation how extremism develops through the time and in different socio-cultural fields that is the prerogative of some certain sociological researches. It approaches to the very essence of phenomenon as it reveals a subtle social and cultural principle of extremism and determines its socio-philosophical aspects. According to the approach mentioned above, five main patterns were found and described in modern researches of extremism: “rational extremism”, “mainstream vs extreme”, “extremism as monism”, “extremism as ideation”, “extremism as method”. It is also noticed that one theory (or definition) is able to combine two or more patterns. The integration of patterns can become a promising direction in the formation of entire theory of extremism.
