ONSITE EXPERIENCE OF PAST EXHIBITIONS USING REALITY TECHNOLOGY AND DISPLAY OF SCULPTURE
Abstract
In this research, we develop a system, which enables the users to experience past exhibitions on-site, by using AR technology. Our efforts focused on the new methods for using "digital archives" with respect to the spatiality of exhibitions and archives of site-specific or installation art. The purpose of this system is to propose a new use of an archive using AR technology, and to help users acquire various understandings about an exhibition. The system shows interactively the scene of past exhibition on the screen of the device. Imagining the space of a certain exhibition, the user directs the digital device with a camera to that site and refers to the desired exhibition from the data that have been stored in archives. We reproduced some exhibitions, which viewers can explore through iPad using AR technology. An exhibition “「clas」AR-chive” was held at the Nagoya University project gallery「clas」in 2013 in order to give a proof experiment. The system was developed using vuforia as AR engine, and Unity as 3D editor. In the gallery, art works, which functioned as AR markers were exhibited on the wall. The system provides an opportunity to the viewers to experience past exhibitions on-site. The feedback that we have received from the participants who used this system indicates that it leads them to various aspects of viewing exhibitions. This system requires a precondition that exhibitions have conserved photographs as an archive. It also could be applied only on paintings and drawing. We target to display sculptures on a device as 3-dimensional data and are developing a new system. The proving test is scheduled in july, and a speech will be given regarding its result.
