LAND USE CHANGES AND LANDSCAPE STABILITY: A CASE STUDY OF RADISA CATCHMENT (WESTERN SLOVAKIA)
Abstract
Landscape stability cannot be absolute because no living system in the landscape can be totally unchanged. Partial changes inside the landscape and changes in the whole landscape are directly related to the type of stability in a particular landscape component and to the spatial structure of the landscape. Stable patches represent areas that are identically used during the whole studied period. The aim of the paper is to analyze land use changes and landscape stability in a small catchment of RadiВљa watercourse (Western Slovakia) in two time horizons - 1949 and 2014. Geographic information systems (GIS) were used to digitize land use categories based on the interpretation of aerial images. The changes in land use categories in the studied period were quantitatively assessed. In the study area, the share of arable land recorded the most significant decrease by more than half (by 15.21%). On the other hand, the share of forests increased by 5.24%, glades by 3.04%, and built-up areas by 2.94%. Landscape stability was determined by the overlay method using GIS. Furthermore, the stable patches were quantified representing 72.92% of the total catchment area. The largest share out of the total stable area was recorded in land use category of forests (78.70%) and arable land (16.15%). Based on the results of analyses, we assume that the share of unstable areas in the study area will increase both in the case of temporary, which land use recurs during the time, and permanent unstable areas.
