Abstract

Estonian Theatre is a unique phenomenon. In a population of 1.3 million, one million people visit the theatre every year. Tallinn City Theatre is one of the most renowned theatre companies in Estonia. In 2016, Tallinn City Theatre celebrated its 50th anniversary. Dating back to the Soviet times as Estonian Youth Theatre, a state-owned touring company made up of an entire class of fresh drama school graduates and a small number of well-known performers, it has transformed during five decades into an established, yet vibrant and dynamic repertory theatre, operating in one of the most remarkable theatre buildings in the world. The history of the oldest buildings can be traced back to the fifteenth century and originally, the buildings were owned by different city aldermen [1]. The authors of this paper analysed the visual communication of Tallinn City Theatre from the perspective of ethical and sustainable management. Our analysis was focused on the website information of the theatre. In our case study, we used Talcott ParsonsВ’ paradigm about the continuity of social systems, which is based on the system theory and can be seen as a general model of sustainable development. Our results show that the visual communication of the theatre reflects sustainable management principles. Hence, we can conclude that Tallinn City Theatre is an innovative, ethical and socially responsible theatre company.
