Abstract

Using Freud’s psychoanalysis as a starting point for our study, we want to investigate whether the built environment one grew up in has an influence on our brains and on our future architectural preferences. The Viennese psychologist aims to make the unconscious mind, conscious, and his findings teach us that the repressed emotions and experiences have an impact on our brains, and therefore on the quality of our lives. How does the brain influence our perception of the space? Everything is a matter of perception, both in life and architecture. There is no good or bad, right or wrong. Only we can give meaning to things. Which elements of design trigger in people such different attitudes, from serenity, peace, tranquility, to fear, anxiety or violence? This could help us learn from our childhood environments and improve the mental and physical conditions of the people, by carefully designing our places. The universal laws of the Universe say that we attract the spaces that contain exactly what we contain inside since everything is energy. So, well-designed spaces are meant to find this bridge between our brains, perceptions and our outer world, the built environment.
