Abstract

Mythology, as well as history, is permanently negotiated as a reconstructed context-dependent reality. Throughout the present paper we are providing an interpretative insight into the meanings conferred to popular narratives such as the Ragnarok in the lyrical agenda of bands that are generally inclined to use or misuse Norse elements which can be perceived as milestones for either a self-image or a broader worldview. The reception is explored in terms of the basic components of Pagan music: the idealization of the past, opposition to Christianity and romanticization of the primordial nature, all of which we are regarding as a form of alternate history, symbolic refuge or foundation myth.
